The main event at UFC 247 has brought in an air of excitement, happiness, and disappointment. Jon Jones vs. Dominick Reyes provided for a nail-biting dual for the complete duration of 5 rounds, at the end of which Jon Jones won by unanimous decision.
It had long been speculated that Reyes would require a good start to gain any chance of beating Jones. And that is exactly what Reyes did. The fight started with Reyes dominating the octagon, landing several low kicks and body blows to the champion. While Bones Jones applied the tactic of defending and wearing the opponent out, it didn’t seem to be quite helpful in the earlier stages of the fight.
There were heart-stopping various moments in the match when it seemed that The Devastator had done the impossible and beaten Jon Jones. The first round itself saw the Champion go down, only to get back up again as swiftly as ever.

Reyes delivered a whole lot of damage to Jones, one of the most devastating being his neatly placed and strong uppercut. Meanwhile, Jones too started picking up pace towards the end of the third round, dishing out spinning kicks and punch combos. A clear winner was the takedown that Jones managed to secure to his name.
With the win, Jones has surpassed George St Pierre for the number of wins in championship fights. Jones has now 14 wins in title fights compared to GSP’s 13 wins. When asked about the achievement Jones said:
I think I had a moment, just a second ago I shed some tears. I think it really hit me. It’s amazing man. It’s amazing. I get to be up there with some of the history’s great. And what a way to get it. A hard-earned victory. I embraced the grind and I was just a little bit tougher than he was.
The fight ended with a unanimous decision in favor of the defending champion with a score of 49-46.
What Does the Future Hold For Jon Jones?
While he did as he had promised and won the fight, Jones wasn’t exactly at his best tonight. The man is revered as a legend due to the impeccability with which he is known to down his opponents. Yet, this wasn’t the case tonight.
Dominick Reyes gave Jones a run for his money, and if it weren’t for the takedown and octagon control, Jones could have lost his title. While Jon Jones has gone on record to say that he wishes to be Champion for the next decade, the odds of that happening have changed quite drastically. The social media is filled with controversy regarding the decision of the match, and rightly so. It was too close for comfort.
