Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman may be the smallest guy on tour, but he does have a big game. Diego has had the best season of his career so far this year. He made it to the finals at the Rome Masters and reached the semi-finals at the French Open too.

Schwartzman also broke into the ‘top 10’ for the first time and ended up qualifying for the ATP Finals in London. With each year passing by, the Argentine has continued to progress and amaze us. Another youngster on the rise is American Reilly Opelka. The 6 ft 11 inches giant recently spoke of his matches against Schwartzman.

The 23-year old stated, “Honestly, I think Diego hates it. It’s the most physical matchup for him. I get why. I played really well there. He doesn’t make many mistakes, he finds a way to make that rhythm. Then he gets to a match with me, and he doesn’t. It’s obvious why, that’s just our game styles. I’m sure we’ll have many matchups in the future and he’s gonna beat me.”

The two of them have played each other on three occasions. Diego won the first time, but the last two meetings have gone in the favor of the American. Opelka feels it’s his service that is key to the success of his wins over the small Argentine.

He went on to add, “The reason for some of my success with him is, if I’m serving well if I’m over 75% of first serves in, it’s a nightmare for him. He breaks serve over 35% of the time. And if I’m first-serving 75% of the time, as good a returner as you are, if you can’t touch the ball, you can’t play it. And you know, his only weakness is a weaker second serve, that’s the physics of it.”

Diego has certainly stepped up his game. Even the American shows signs of progress. It’ll be interesting to see the two of them face off in the future.
