“I Want to Entertain”: Naomi Osaka Opens up on Playing Fan-Less US Open 2020

We are up and running with the US Open 2020. This year’s tournament is different and comes with a very peculiar pretext. Due to the pandemic, the organizers have taken certain precautions to make the Grand Slam as safe as possible. And so that has come at the expense of conducting a fan-less tournament. No.4 seed Naomi Osaka won her first-round match against Misaki Doi in an empty Arthur Ashe stadium.

Osaka, a former champion at the flushing meadows, does enjoy a huge fan following. After her 1st round match, she talked about the crowd. It is often said that the players extract extra energy from crowds, but in the case of players like Osaka, it seems there is an urge from the player as well to give something back to the crowd. Osaka says that she wants to entertain the crowd. And so she can go overboard with her decisions during the match.

“With a crowd sometimes I do some stuff because I want to entertain people and it might not be the best decision at the time. Since there’s no crowd right now, I’m not really doing the bad decision making.” Osaka said

On the men’s front, a real fan favorite has always been Gael Monfils. The crowds love the Frenchman because Monfils stays his comical self on court. And so Osaka wanted to see how Monfils would have done in this no crowd situation.

“It would be nice to see Monfils here. I wonder what he would do.” Osaka said

Osaka plays Camila Giorgi in the second round tomorrow. She has been in great form and was close to winning the Western & Southern Open before a hamstring injury forced her to withdraw from the final. Osaka seems to be fit for the US Open and so is one of the favorites to win the tournament.
