World No.1 Novak Djokovic delightfully welcomed Alexander Zverev to Serbia for the Adria Tour in Belgrade, Serbia today. World No.3 Dominic Thiem and Bulgarian No.1 Grigor Dimitrov were also present at the charity event.

In a witty and eventful speech for the press conference, Zverev expressed his satisfaction being in Belgrade as this was his first visit to Serbia and also discussed tennis’s future going forward.

“For me, not the most surprising, but the nicest thing to see is that life really goes on here,” said the world No. 7. “We were in restaurants yesterday with live music…people were not afraid like they are maybe in other countries. So this is very nice to see.”

“Novak told me if you don’t come, I will never let you beat me again,” said Zverev.

Alexander Zverev also echoed and agreed with Djokovic’s concerns with the situation related to the US Open. The mandatory 14-Day quarantine for the players arriving in the US and with the allowance of only one person to accompany the player from his/her team hasn’t done well with the players.

“It’s great if we get the opportunity to play, but under these circumstances, I don’t think a lot of players will feel comfortable in the environment there,” Zverev said. He further added, “So that’s my opinion. But it’s not really up to us players in that way, in a way the US Open decides.”

Dominic Thiem and Grigor Dimitrov also expressed their reluctance to play in the U.S. Although they have insisted on waiting for an official announcement by US Open which is likely to be on Monday.

Large crowd showed up at Adria Tour organized by Novak Djokovic

The Novak Djokovic Foundation is organizing the tour. It will be held till July 5th at four locations- Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, and Bosnia.

With the event garnering a huge crowd and media personnel, cares taken for social distancing and masks are minimal. Masks and basic precautions were harder to find. 

A final decision regarding the US Open is due on Monday. Strict Rules and the pandemic situation in the US are the cause for concern. Many players could withdraw from the tournament if the situations don’t improve.
