The news of a new player association, to be led by Novak Djokovic and Vasek Pospisil raised many eyebrows on Saturday. Divided opinions soon started to rise within the tennis community and among players. Some of the top players started to voice their opinions on the new union, which would challenge the ATP structure. Andy Murray lists his reasons for uncertainty
“I won’t be signing it today. I’m not totally against a player union or players’ association, but right now there’s a couple of things,” Murray said when asked of his plans. “One is I feel like the current management should be given some time to implement their vision. Whether that works out or not would potentially influence me in the future as to which way I would go,” Murray added.

Murray’s second reason for not being in favor of the proposed union is the non-involvement of the WTA. Murray feels that if the female players were on board as well, it would ‘send a stronger message’.

“Also, the fact that the women aren’t part of [the new plans]. I feel like that would send a significantly – well, just a much more powerful message personally if the WTA were on board with it, as well. That’s not currently the case,” Murray said.

Federer and Nadal not in favor as well
The second reason expressed by Murray is also in line with the idea of a ATP-WTA merger floated by top players recently. They believe it is the right way to go and promises a much stronger administration of the sport. The talk around the same started when Roger Federer tweeted about it.

Federer and Rafael Nadal also opposed the formation of a new association that Djokovic and Pospisil are said to co-lead.
