Austin Ekeler last played in the NFL for the Washington Commanders in Week 2 of the 2025 season against the Green Bay Packers. He was unable to take a single snap for the Commanders last season due to a serious injury, and after the end of his two-year contract, the veteran RB now finds himself as a free agent.

While he could soon find a new home, owing to the veteran presence he adds to a roster, Ekeler has decided to help out fans in a unique way doing something he himself is passionate about.

“So I am currently unemployed, which means I have some extra free time. So what the heck,” Austin Ekeler said on Instagram. “If you guys want me to pick your draft order for this year’s fantasy league, send it over. Put a number next to everyone’s name, and I will set your draft order for this year as a thank you to all the fantasy fans for all the love out there. Appreciate you guys. Let’s have a great year.”

Fantasy Football is not something new to Ekeler. He has long embraced it, building a reputation as a fantasy football fan-favorite star. He famously admitted to drafting himself first overall in his own leagues to bet on his dual-threat production on a TMZ Sports interview in 2021. And he wasn’t kidding as he routinely earned 300 PPR fantasy points during his peak Chargers years per FantasyData.com.

He also co-hosted Yahoo Sports’ weekly show Ekeler’s Edge for three seasons to provide weekly start/sit fantasy football advice and more related content. He also founded Eksperience, a fan-tech platform connecting fantasy managers directly with athletes.

After suffering the Achilles tendon injury in Week 2 of the 2025 season, Ekeler was medically cleared to start all footballing activities in April 2026.

In a recent interview on Mathew Berry’s Fantasy Football Happy Hour podcast, Ekeler cleared the air about his NFL return.

“I’m at that time in my career where I’m more of a support role guy—that’s kind of where I see myself. And so for me, okay, what is the situation with the coaching, what’s the timing of the team, and is it a right fit for Austin?

“So I’m playing it slow right now. I have no reason to rush into anything, and [I’m] looking for the best opportunity for me. Is that going to be Week 1? Is that going to be later on? Maybe there’s an injury that pops up and presents an opportunity for me. So that’s where I’m at right now.”

Whether an opportunity presents itself for Ekeler remains to be seen. Otherwise fans can expect him to take his Fantasy Football expertise to new heights.
