“I’m Not Venus” – Serena Williams On The Oprah Winfrey Show

Serena Williams and Venus Williams were on a steady path to tennis glory at the beginning of the 2000s. It was slowly becoming apparent that there was little to no competition to stop these women from scaling amazing heights.

Venus was still the more dominant one at the time. Until 2002, she even lead the head to head record against Serena Williams. Things were to change in the years to come as Serena would become the most dominant star in women’s tennis.

However, Venus Williams had always been an inspiration for her young sister. She also achieved success earlier than Serena. In an episode of the Oprah Winfrey show from the year 2001, Serena confessed that she worshipped her sister Venus.

There is always an element of hero-worship that’s inherent in sibling relationships. Even though you hate to confess it, you are almost always inclined to copy the mannerisms of your elder brother or sister.

The same held true for Serena who copied each and every aspect of Venus. In fact, she talked, behaved, and dressed just like Venus. She would go as far as to say that she was just a smaller version of Venus Williams.

Serena said that it was just two years previous to that when she actually started to develop an identity independent of Venus. That was some big praise coming from the then 21-year-old. It’s not hard to believe as Venus Williams was actually a superstar in those times.

The coming years would see Serena gaining a lot more success. However, her tremendous respect for her beloved sister never faded. The two would also amass many records playing together in the doubles category. This would just be one of their many success interviews. We continue to be entertained by the amazing pair of Serena Williams and Venus Williams to this day.
