Injury Woes Continue for Kevin Anderson in 2020

French Open 2019

The tall and calm Kevin Anderson is struggling to stay afloat in his tennis career. The South African has pulled out of the upcoming Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships due to injury. A right knee injury disrupted his 2019 season, restricting the big man to just 15 competitive matches.

Anderson is struggling with his form and fitness as his injury woes continue from the previous year. He was forced to pull out of the US Open last year due to injury, as he went in for surgery.

He returned to the courts at the ATP Cup in January and put in a decent display, winning two of his three matches. His defeat came against Novak Djokovic, but Anderson put in a commendable performance in that match too.

His fortunes seemed to have turned again, until the Australian Open. Kevin could not progress beyond the second round of Australian Open, losing to Taylor Fritz. In the New York Open that concluded just a few days back, he went down in the opening round to Jason Jung of America.

But this is understandable given he was struggling through the entire season in 2019 with knee problems. He opted for a surgery on his knee to rectify the problem after pulling out of the US Open. And it takes a while for players to get back into full match fitness after a period injury and surgery.

But just as it looked like he would finally get a good run of matches this year, Anderson has once again pulled out of the upcoming Dubai Open.

After a sublime rise through the ranks since 2017, Anderson has consistently been in the top tier. He has reached two Grand Slam finals at the 2017 US Open and 2018 Wimbledon.

After a very good year in 2018, Anderson managed his career high ranking of World No. 5 at the start of 2019. But with the most injury plagued season of his career ensuing, he dropped down sharply and now sits on the No. 121 spot.

He is yet to make public details about this injury. It remains to be seen if it is once again his right knee that is acting up or something new.
