The Cleveland Cavaliers’ title hopes have been seriously dented with the news of Kyrie Irving’s injury. The 3x NBA all-star point guard suffered an injury to his left knee in the first game of the NBA finals against the Warriors. Irving injured his knee in the second minute of Overtime when he went down.

Afterward, he said he felt “something different” in his knee and his instincts were right as tests confirmed his fears. 24 hours after undergoing an MRI, he had surgery to repair his shattered kneecap as he now prepares to recover for the 2015-16 season. He is expected to be out for at least 3-4 months.

It’s a cruel blow for the Cavs who had already lost Love in the first round. It’s even more devastating for Irving. He has been dogged by injuries to his back and knee throughout his career. This season he seemed to have pushed it to the side as he had become one of the finest point guards this season.

He was not at his best against the Bulls and missed 2 games in the conference finals against Atlanta. He seemed to have recovered, and in Game 1 of the Finals, he scored 23 points to go along with 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals in 43 minutes.

The Cavaliers will now need other players to step up and support LeBron James as the shorthanded Cavs try to prevent the Warriors from taking a 2-0 lead before heading back to Cleveland. It is expected that Matthew Dellavedova will start in place of Irving. He has made good plays and had a positive impact against Chicago Bulls and the Atlanta Hawks.

LeBron tried to remain positive.

“The good thing about it, we’ve been in this position before,” James said. “So next man up and guys will be ready for the challenge.”
