Epic Games released Fortnite in 2017 and soon dethroned PUBG as the most popular battle royale game in the world. Ever since, some of the biggest game publishers like EA and Activision have released their own battle royale titles like Apex Legends and Call of Duty Warzone, respectively.
Regardless, Fortnite has maintained its success and is still one of the most played and viewed games on the internet. Many believe that collaborations with colossal brands have played the biggest role in keeping Fortnite relevant even after four years of release.
These collaborations comprise Party Royale events with the likes of Travis Scott, Marshmello, and crossovers like the Marvel-themed Chapter 2 Season 4. Accordingly, Fortnite currently offers skins and cosmetic items from a plethora of diverse franchises around the world.

Fortnite creator Ali-A wants the developers to release original skins
Despite the aforementioned collaborations, Fortnite has also maintained a complex storyline over the years. It revolves around the Zero Point and majorly includes the characters that were a part of the game originally. Moreover, original skins designed by Epic Games like Drift, The Raven, and Peely are still fan favorites.
In a recent tweet, prominent Fortnite YouTuber Ali-A opened up on how the developers must strike a balance between original content and collaborations:

Fortnite collabs vs Original content:
Fortnite wants to create a "multiverse" where all things (comics, games, films etc.) can exist and that's only going to mean more collabs.
However as long as we continue to get original Fortnite skins and stories I'll be happy. 👍

Ali-A understands that Epic Games looks forward to creating a multiverse. It will not only contain Fortnite, but characters and items from comics, games, and movies. Accordingly, the battle royale will cater to a much larger audience.

However, the YouTuber also demands original skins and stories. For instance, the Fortnite Crew Pack for January featured the Green Arrow outfit. While some DC Comics fans were satisfied with the pack, a majority of subscribers outright rejected it. From the looks of it, they expected the developers to keep the Fortnite Crew skins authentic.
Should Epic Games avoid crossover seasons?
There were contrasting opinions about the Marvel-themed Chapter 2 Season 4 too. Marvel fans certainly welcomed superheroes like Thor, Iron Man, and Wolverine to the game, but the lack of original content throughout the season was disappointing, to say the least.
As per rumors, the upcoming Chapter 2 Season 6 will also be a massive crossover with DC Comics. Alongside Batman, several characters from the franchise will play an important role in the storyline. Naturally, this has sparked the debate around collaborations in Fortnite yet again.

Interestingly, some fans have pointed out that frequent collaborations have actually worked against Epic Games. Back in the day, collaborations were rare, and as a result, every new announcement related to a new brand/character/skin held its own importance.
In contrast to that, collaborations are too frequent in Fortnite now. The latest Chapter 2 Season 5 is a perfect example of the same. Hence, new collaborations fail to stand out now, and even the community seems tired of them.

All in all, working with brands and movies might be beneficial for Epic Games commercially. However, in the longer run, Fortnite might lose a large chunk of its user-base if lack of original content remains a consistent issue.
