The study has shown that skateboarding allows acts as an outlet for self-expression, something that can take a back seat in mid-life.

Adults taking to skateboarding to maintain their sanity

The study was conducted by studying 30 middle-aged skateboarders in Hong Kong and the UK. Dr. Paul O’Connor, who is a Sociological researcher from the University of Exeter, was the lead on the project.

He interviewed these 30 skaters, enquiring about what led them to do it and why they continue to do it.

During his research, O’Connor met many people. Men and women, who were evidently battling depression and a sense of loneliness. They believed the sport acted as an outlet for them, literally sustaining their sanity.

“People are often saying that skateboarding is a lifeline and sanity for them,” said O’Connor. They see the sport as chance of reconnecting with their youth.

O’Connor himself believes skateboarding provides and outlet for people to get through the struggles of life. It helps to deal with whatever problems, whether mental or emotional or familial.

“Skateboarding provides a serious emotional outlet for people who have experienced personal trials in the collapse of long-term relationships, career challenges, parenthood and substance abuse.”

A major reason for this could be because skateboarding celebrates the failures as part of the success.

A chance at joy again

Another benefit of the sport is that it doesn’t require too much of an effort or physical exercise. Hence, it has also come to be a bonding activity between parents and their children.

Many of these people used to love this sport when they were kids. Now that the sport has gained popularity once again, it has rekindled their childhood joy.

Dr. Teo Mendez, an orthopedic surgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital believes that doing things we are passionate about is a part of life.

“That is part of life, doing things you enjoy and are passionate about,” he said.
