“It’s Our Mind Playing Tricks On Us”-Mike Tyson Receives Warning Ahead Of Boxing Return

Of late there has been a lot of discussion in the boxing world of former greats returning to the ring, including Mike Tyson. But Jonny Nelson isn’t in favor of this.

Former world champion and Sky Sports pundit Johnny Nelson has voiced his opinion on this trend. In the past few weeks former champions Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, and James Toney have all expressed their desire to return to in-ring action. Mostly at an exhibition level, but still.

While these talks of them coming out of retirement was still in the air, Mike Tyson released a video that went viral. It showed him boxing with the same fierceness and speed with which he did back in the day. He quite literally turned up the heat and was seen displaying the power and speed of his prime years.

But Nelson says we shouldn’t let this sway us. Tyson towards the end of his career saw great failures. He was knocked out against Danny Williams and McBride. And eventually called it when he lost to Kevin McBride in 2015, via a stoppage.

Jonny Nelson said, “It’s about the pace, that timing, that light-switch reaction. Once you’ve had time out to reflect and assess, you think ‘I could do that’. But it’s our mind playing tricks on us, because when you get in the ring and you come up against a youngster who’s not as good as you, technically, but has more pace than you, he will do you every day of the week. “

He added, “We’ve seen Mike Tyson hit the headlines on the pads. And everyone’s like ‘oh my gosh, he’s the don’. We’re remembering the good times but we’re not remembering the back end of the career when the body didn’t switch as quick as it used to. The body didn’t react as quick as it used to.”

Nelson doesn’t think it’s a great idea that these former champs want to return to the sport. He says the ring will eventually get the better of them, it’s better if they stay out of it.
