Tennis players are in New York to finally restart their season. Fans and players alike were deprived of tennis for nearly 6 months due to the global pandemic. And so World No.3 Dominic Thiem is ready to fire and bring home some titles

Thiem who is the second highest-ranked player in New York as World No.2 Rafael Nadal decided against traveling to the US. In these uncertain times, the US Open took the right call to organize the Grand Slam without fans. Players rely heavily on the fans and it will be interesting to see how they will adapt to this new normal.

“The draw is still super, super-strong” – Dominic Thiem

In a recent press conference ahead of the Western and Southern Open, Thiem acknowledged the role of fans in the match. Spectators give energy to the players in crunch situations and so it will be difficult without them.

“Tennis is such a mental sport, and I guess it makes it way more difficult without fans, because I just imagine playing in the fifth set on Arthur Ashe, night session, way past midnight, and in a normal year you get so much energy from the fans,” Thiem said

“They give you so much, all this atmosphere. That’s going to be a very interesting thing to experience. But it’s the same for everybody. The one who will do it the best, who will manage these special circumstances the best, will be the one who lifts the trophy at the end.” Thiem added

Also, many people are undermining the current draw at the US Open 2020. The main argument was that this year’s tournament will be easy as many prominent names aren’t there. But Thiem disapproves the notion and says that the draw is really hard and it is the same as any other year.

“The one who wins the title here definitely deserves it, and players-wise or draw-wise, it’s worth the same like every year. The draw is still super, super strong,” he said

Thiem probably has had the second-best start to the 2020 season, only behind Novak Djokovic. He reached the finals of the Australian Open losing a closely contested match to Novak Djokovic. So he is one of the challengers from the next-gen camp who could trouble Djokovic.
