World No.23 Jannik Sinner suffered an embarrassing defeat against World No.309 Jack Draper in the first round of Queens Championships ahead of Wimbledon 2021. Sinner was the third seed at the event whereas Draper was a wildcard entrant.
At the start, Sinner found himself with a double break and 4-0 up in the first set. But from there, the Italian’s serve dropped and Draper was imposing on Sinner.
“At the beginning it worked well, but after a bit, he understood my game. It was a little bit of a rollercoaster and he played the important points better than me,” Sinner said.

From leading 4-0 in the opening set, Sinner then served for the set at 5-3. However, he gave up his advantage and Draper brought the set back on serve. From there the set proceeded to the tiebreaker where Sinner would fail to convert two set points. Draper was more clinical as he converted his chances to take the tiebreaker, 8-6, and the set 7-6.
“Today, I was not serving well and I think he deserved to win. He has more experience than me on the grass and I wish him good luck,” Sinner said.

The second set was evenly poised. And Sinner got a chance to serve out this set as well. But again, like in the first set, he failed. At, 5-4 Draper broke Sinner back to restore the parity in the second set. From here the second set went to the tiebreaker, where Draper didn’t lose a point on his serve. Sinner lost on his serve twice and hence lost the tiebreaker, 7-2, and the match as well. This was the first ATP main draw victory of Draper’s career.
“It’s so nice to get my first win here. I’m just really enjoying my tennis. In big moments, that showed today. The thing I’m doing is the fundamentals pretty well,” Draper said upon winning in his home turf.

Sinner is very inexperienced on grass. Everyone has seen his prowess on hard court and clay court, but on the grass his arsenal is incomplete. The Italian teenager will have to do a lot to avoid another embarrassing outing in the upcoming Wimbledon Championships 2021.
