“She’s a Diva”- This one comment made by Jessica Pegula during a private conversation seemed to cause a huge uproar in the tennis world. The American made the comment regarding Mirra Andreeva while having a private conversation with the coach. While the general public likes a bit of to-and-fro between players, the players themselves seem to have moved past it with grace, as evident by Andreeva’s recent photo dump.

“DIVAS”, that is all Andreeva commented on the picture of her and Pegula during the photoshoot day at the WTA Finals, as the Russian did a photo dump on Instagram. Both donned Chanel outfits and seemed in great spirits as they were photographed smiling at each other. Pegula was not far behind, as the American was one of the first people to reply to Andreeva’s post.
“Divas in Chanel”, replied Pegula.
The frank social media interaction between the two and their jovial conversation seem to have put a stop to speculation that the two players had some friction after Pegula’s comments. The American was not impressed by Andreeva’s behavior towards her own team during a competitive practice session at Indian Wells, as the two were sharpening their focus ahead of the WTA Finals.
Once the session had ended, Pegula expressed her candid views on Andreeva’s mentality and her dissatisfaction with how Andreeva’s coach, Conchita Martinez, egged it on rather than putting a stop to it. The World No. 5 was speaking her mind to her coach, Mark Knowles, unaware that the hot mics around the court were picking up on their conversation, and that it was being broadcast live on the WTA’s streaming feeds.
WTA was quick to react to diffuse the situation from becoming even more explosive, as they took down the practice session videos from their official YouTube channel, while also issuing a formal apology for not informing the players about the presence of the hot mics around the courts. Pegula took the initiative as well, reaching out to Andreeva to resolve any awkwardness between the two.
It’s not that Pegula was just being critical of Andreeva. The conversation, which spread on social media like wildfire, also saw the American praise Andreeva’s game, stating that the Russian had the technical ability to even surpass someone like Coco Gauff, provided she worked on the mental side of things.
The Pegula-Andreeva incident was not the only hot-mic controversy at the WTA Finals this year. Even the World No.1, Elena Rybakina, was caught on the mic having an awkward conversation with her coach, Stefano Vukov, as the Kazakh was having her practice session against Linda Noskova. With the complicated history of that partnership and the Pegula fiasco earlier, the WTA was being heavily criticized by fans on social media.
However, it seems a few hot mics are not enough to cause dents in the interpersonal relationships between the players, as the likes of Andreeva and Pegula will be keen to put it all behind them and give their best at the Tour Finals.
Jessica Pegula and Mirra Andreeva Will Look to Give Their Best at the WTA Finals
For Pegula and Andreeva, the WTA Finals might mean something very different. This is the fifth consecutive year that the American has qualified for the year-ending championships, underscoring her status as one of the Tour’s consistent performers. Even this year, Pegula has fifty wins to her name, winning two titles from finals.
Andreeva, on the other hand, is making her WTA Finals debut this year after the Russian had her massive breakthrough at the French Open. Like Pegula, she has 50 wins this season and reached 5 finals, winning 3 titles. Both players last played during the Asian swing, and will be gunning to give it a go at Indian Wells to finish the season strong.
While Pegula will be looking to break her ceiling and win one of the bigger titles on the Tour, Andreeva will be keen to show she belongs with the best players in the world. The American finished runner-up at the WTA Finals in 2023, losing to Iga Swiatek. This might be the first time for Andreeva at the Finals, but the Russian knows what it takes to win at Indian Wells, as she won the WTA 1000 title in the Californian desert in 2025.
