The Buffalo Bills made a pretty shocking move when they fired Sean McDermott, the man who led the Bills from the grave and turned them into a perennial playoff team, after losing on the road to the 1-seed in the AFC. It was probably the right move, because McDermott has proven he can’t get over the hump, but it was still surprising nonetheless.

The Bills instantly became one of the most desirable job openings available. After a pretty quick coaching search, they decided to promote Joe Brady, their offensive coordinator for the past three seasons. He’s done some great work with Josh Allen, but fans don’t seem to love the move, despite Brady getting a lot of head coaching attention over the past few seasons.
Here’s why I think Brady could be the perfect fit for head coach, and how he can rewrite history.

After two years of Brady’s name being mentioned in head coaching circles, it felt like if the Bills didn’t promote him this year, they were going to lose him, and that would be a massive blow to their offense. Josh Allen has played the best football of his career under Brady, so keeping him around for the rest of Allen’s prime seems like the right move.

Let’s compare Allen’s stats when working with Brady to his stats working with Brian Daboll and Ken Dorsey.
| Stat | Brady | Dorsey | Daboll |
| Games | 41 | 28 | 67 |
| QB Rating | 102.2 | 96.6 | 92.5 |
| TD% | 5.56 | 5.71 | 5.25 |
| INT% | 1.63 | 2.81 | 2.11 |
| Win% | .718 | .679 | .627 |

In 41 games with Brady as offensive coordinator, Allen has thrown for 9,105 yards (222 per game), 63 touchdowns (1.54 per game) and 23 interceptions (0.56 per game) while rushing for 1,388 yards (33.9 per game) and 34 touchdowns (0.83 per game). During that span, the Bills are 31-10. But he’s been even better in the postseason.

In the playoffs, Brady and Allen have played seven games as OC and QB. In those games, Allen is averaging 225.9 passing yards, 50 rushing yards, 1.72 passing touchdowns and 1.0 rushing touchdown per game. Over the course of a 17-game season, that would be 3,804 passing yards, 850 rushing yards, 30 passing touchdowns and 17 rushing touchdowns. That’s more total yards and total touchdowns than he had in his MVP season in 2024.
Keeping Brady around ensures Josh Allen will continue to play like an MVP for the foreseeable future. He’s been great with all his OCs, but Brady understands Allen like nobody else.

Brady Can Finally Influence The Roster
When Brady was the offensive coordinator, he didn’t really have a say in who the team signed or drafted, but now that he’s the head coach, he should finally have some influence when it comes to making those decisions.
One of the Bills’ downfalls in recent years has been their inability to give Josh Allen the weapons he needs to beat teams like Kansas City in the postseason. They gave him Stefon Diggs for a handful of years, and they drafted James Cook, but at some point, you have to do more than that for your All-Pro QB.

The good news for Buffalo is that this is a very deep receiver class.. They won’t get any of the top three guys down at pick 26, but guys like Denzel Boston, KC Concepcion and Chris Bell could still be available. Even if they wait until the second round, they could find some value in Chris Brazzell, Zachariah Branch, Elijah Sarratt or someone else.
Then, in free agency, they can clear some cap space and go out and try to sign someone like Jauan Jennings, Wan’Dale Robinson or maybe even Mike Evans to give Allen some help in 2026.
With an offensive head coach in charge, I think (and hope) we’ll see Buffalo get Allen some more help.

Teams that promote one of their coordinators to head coach don’t typically have a ton of success. Guys like Dennis Allen, Antonio Pierce and Jerod Mayo are some recent examples of that, but those struggles date back much further than just the past few years.

Of those 10 coaches, one of them had a winning record during their head coaching tenure. So you might think this means the Bills will fail, but I don’t think any of these head coaches stepped into as good a situation as Brady.
None of those guys inherited a playoff team that has a future Hall of Famer at quarterback. And as far as I can remember, none of them were viewed as a head coaching candidate for three years before accepting the job.

Brady has all the tools he needs to succeed in Buffalo and rewrite history. Now, he just has to do it.
