Seeded sixth at the 2009 US Open, DelPo made it to the final against Roger Federer, but not before defeating Rafael Nadal in the semifinal. He then put on a masterful display against Roger and defeated the Swiss in a five-set encounter. He thus became the first man since David Nalbandian to beat Federer at the US Open. He finished the year inside the top 10 players, making him the youngest at the time.

In 2010, DelPo injured his wrists for the first time, and though he played at the Australian Open, he was knocked off in the fourth round. He remained injured for nine months, and his rankings dropped past 250. In 2011, he returned to the tour, and though he couldn’t win any majors, he finished as the number 11 player in the world, making him the ATP Comeback Player of the Year.
