Karolina Pliskova stunned by her compatriot, Karolina Muchova 6-4, 5-7, 13-11  in the round of 16 in Wimbledon Championships 2019 on Monday.

When the two players met previously at the Australian Open, earlier this year, Karolina Pliskova won the match in straight sets.

The no. 3 seed at the Wimbledon Championships 2019, Karolina Pliskova reached the fourth round in the All England Lawn Tennis Club after defeating Lin Zhu 6-2, 7-4, and Monica Puig 6-0, 6-4 comfortably in the first two rounds. However, she suffered in the third round as she edged past Su-Wei Hsieh in three sets 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.

While Karolina Muchova, who is enjoying a career-high ranking of 68 reached the round of 16 at the Championships 2019 without losing a set. The Czech defeated Aleksandra Krunic 7-5, 6-2 in the opening round before defeating Madison Brengle 6-3, 6-4 and Anett Kontaveit 7-6, 6-3 in the second and third round respectively.

Karolina Pliskova dominated the first set as she held her all service games and broke her compatriot, Karolina Muchova once to take a lead and win the set 6-4.

Karolina Muchova, however, fought back hard in the second set with the momentum on Pliskova’s side. Both the players rallied past till 5-5 but Muchova held her nerves and won two consecutive games, breaking Karolina Pliskova to win the set 7-5.

The battle between the ‘Karolinas’ and the ‘Czechs’ went on till the final set. There was nothing to differentiate between the two in the final set as the two players were rallying through till 10-10 when Pliskova finally broke Muchova to get a lead of 11-10.

Serving for the match, Karolina Pliskova could not hold her serve as Muchova broke Pliskova to love and leveled the set again at 11-11. She then won the two consecutive games to conquer the set 13-11.

The only women’s match at the Wimbledon Championships to reach 12-12 in the final set since 2000 was Georges vs Srebotnik in 2008.

Muchova will face Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon Championships 2019. Earlier, Svitolina defeated Petra Martic in straight sets in the fourth round.
