In the buildup to the Belgian Grand Prix, the Alfa Romeo team found themselves in a fix. As it turned out, during the summer break, Kimi Raikkonen picked up a small injury. The truth of the matter was that the veteran Finn pulled a muscle.

Just to be on the safe side, Alfa Romeo flew in Marcus Ericsson as a back up, if Raikkonen was not up to it. The good news for Alfa is that Kimi Raikkonen seems to be fully fit and ready to race at his favourite, and most successful circuit.

Speaking to the media about the injury and his summer break, he said, “[Summer break] was good, but it is never long enough, but its nice to get back to racing.”

On his injury, “Yeah, I’m getting too old, I always said that this sport is getting too dangerous, maybe drinking beer is more safe, Usually you don’t get injured, you just get a hangover.”

He confirmed that it was his brake leg that suffered the pulled muscle, but he figured that it would be okay. But in any case, the team had a backup plan and someone had to travel, regardless of the outcome.

“There is a reason why every team has a third driver. It would be stupid not to have our third driver [here] in case I couldn’t be driving,” he explained. “Then it is the worst case scenario!

“It is a normal story. It is a difficult situation for him also because he had a race, but that is how it is.”

Kimi Raikkonen was not the only summer break injury casualty, as McLaren’s Lando Norris also injured his leg. The Briton confirmed during one of his video game streams, that he injured it while going for a jog. The good news is that he has fully recovered, if his presence at last weekend’s MotoGP race in Silverstone was any proof.
