Legendary Ageless Boxer Passes Away

Kenyan professional boxer, Douglas Maina has passed away.
Douglas Maina was a Kenyan sporting hero. He was a professional boxer and represented his country at several levels. His highest accomplishment is the bronze medal at the 1978 Edmonton Commonwealth Games.
The news of his death came on Thursday. National coordinator of Heroes and Heroines in Sports, legendry sprinter Rose Tata-Muya let the news out after finding out about the tragedy taking place early Thursday morning.

Tata-Muya said she received this sad news from his wife herself. Maina’s wife sent Muya a text at 7:47 am that read, “My husband has rested.”. Maina passed away in the comfort of his home in Donholm, Nairobi after ailing for a couple of years.
Tata Muya and Douglas Maina were a part of the same Kenya Team that went to the 1978 African Games and 1978 Edmonton Commonwealth Games. She said, “He has been in-and-out of the hospital for some years. It’s a sad morning for the country.” Tata-Muya was a close friend of Douglas Maina.
Douglas Maina was well very well know for the skill set he had at his disposal. Veteran sportswriter John Nene expressed that Maina was known for his snapping deadly right punches. It’s what he credits for Douglas Maina’s bronze medals at the 1978 African Games in Algiers and Edmonton at bantamweight. “He was a good friend, having known each other in the early 70s as junior boxers at Pumwani,” said Nene.

Douglas Maina accomplishments through the years as a Boxer
Douglas Maina was a part of the famous ‘Hit Squad’ that totaled two gold, two silver, and three bronze medals from the 1978 Edmonton “Club Games”.
He played a huge role in Kenya’s winnings at the Algiers African Games. They finished at the top of the boxing standings with two gold, one silver, and two bronze medals.
