Canadian teenage sensation, Leylah Fernandez was born on 6th September 2002 in Montreal. Her highest ranking in singles is No. 66 and currently is ranked as No.73. However, that is expected to improve for the better after having an impeccable run at the US Open 2021.

When did she start playing?

In January 2019, the teenager competed for the first time at the Australian Open juniors. However, later that year, she won the French Open juniors and became the first Canadian girl to do that after Eugenie Bouchard. 

Later on, in the season, she won her first ITF title, announcing herself on the professional circuit. On that very day, she also won the doubles title. 

She competed in the main draw of the Australian Open 2020 and crashed out in the opening round. However, she won her first WTA title in Mexico this year and is currently in the quarterfinals of the US Open

Personal Life

Leylah’s father Jorge is from Ecuador and is a former soccer player. On the other hand, her mother Irene Exevea is Filipino Canadian. Her younger sister Bianca Jolie is also a tennis player, and her elder sister, Jodeci, is a dentist. Fernandez is fluent in English, French, and Spanish.

In the WTA circuit, she has won a title and been a runner-up once. While competing in the ITF events, she has won a title and been a runner-up twice. In doubles, she has won two titles and been a runner-up twice. In the juniors, she has won a Grand Slam title and been a runner-up once.
