Lionel Messi, on Wednesday, received the Golden boot for the 2018-19 season at the Antiga Fàbrica Estrella Damm in Barcelona. He claimed the award for the sixth time, which is more than any other player in the history of the game. This was also the third consecutive occasion where the Argentine was receiving the award.

Messi’s two eldest sons, Thiago and Mateo, presented him with the award. After receiving the award, Messi credited his whole team for the goals scored.

“I want to thank my family, the board and my teammates,” he was quoted as saying by ESPN. “Thanks especially to Luis and Jordi, who are two of the big reasons I have been able to win this sixth Golden Shoe.

“But even though I am here with the trophy, this is recognition for the whole dressing room. Thank you!”

Messi was already the only player in history to get five Golden Shoes. Cristiano Ronaldo is the second best with 4 golden boots- three with Real Madrid and one with Manchester United.

Messi first won the golden boot in the 2009/10 season with 34 goals before winning in again in 2011/12 (50 goals) and 2012/13 season (46 goals). He is now the recipient of the golden boot for the last three seasons- 2016/17 (37 goals), 2017/18 (34 goals) and 2018/19 (36 goals).

Speaking about the Champions league and LaLiga after winning the award, Messi said: “Obviously the Champions League is special and we want to win it every year but winning La Liga is the most important thing. Being consistent in the league helps you to carry that form into the Champions League and the Copa del Rey.

“Even though the Champions League is huge, we never forget the league and the cup. At Barcelona, we always want to win everything.”

Apart from the 36 league goals last season, Messi has also scored three in the Copa del Rey and 12 in the Champions League (highest in the competition), once again crossing the 50-goal mark in the season.
