Former Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina was set to join AC Milan up until a few days ago. Now, the Spaniard is on the verge of completing a reported £9 million transfer to the Premier League, namely Chelsea.
The 35-year-old was well-sought after by many teams before signing for AC Milan on a free transfer. However, it seems that he will be leaving Italy before even playing a match. Reports state that Reina is set to ink a deal with Chelsea. The Stamford side are actively seeking a new goalkeeper in place of Thibaut Courtois.
Belgian keeper, Courtois, seems destined to become a Real Madrid player in the upcoming season. Both parties have reportedly agreed to a deal for his sale to the La Liga giants.
With Courtois absent, new Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri is actively hunting far and wide for a replacement. Now, it seems that Reina fits the bill as a top notch keeper.
It is believed that Reina is closing in on a £9 million transfer to Stamford Bridge. The deal will also see him reunite with Sarri following their stint together at Napoli.
The Spaniard spent eight seasons with Liverpool between 2005-2013. He played over 200 top flight games and even won the FA Cup and League cup during his tenure with the Reds.
He was eventually loaned to Napoli in 2013, before a move to Bayern Munich. A season later, he moved back to Napoli on a permanent basis.
On 15th May, it was announced that Serie A rivals, AC Milan had acquired his services on a free transfer. But now, it seems that it would not last as Chelsea have got their oar in.
In the international scene, Reina has been with the Spanish side since 2005. However, he mostly played second fiddle to Iker Casillas. But he was part of the 2010 World Cup winning squad.
