Alexander Zverev recently defeated Pierre-Hugues Herbert in a nail-biting encounter at the French Open 2020 and won in the fifth set. The final scoreline was 2-6, 6-4, 7-6, 4-6, and 6-4. Even though he won the match, it was a big upset for the US Open 2020 runner-up. In a game that could have gone either way, both Zverev and Herbert managed to win equal points (164). In the post-match press conference, one could see a clearly frustrated Zverev who, despite the win, looked unhappy with himself.

“I think I have lost the most important five sets in my career so far, which is quite upsetting, but it’s okay,” said an anxious Zverev in the press conference.

After losing the first set, Zverev did make a comeback, but he still didn’t seem too comfortable throughout the match. The third set went to a tie-breaker, and the German managed a narrow escape. But on the positive side, the 23-year-old has won on all six occasions when his match went to the fifth set in the French Open so far. He certainly had a slight advantage this time too and managed to finish on the winning side.

Asked about how was he so effective out in the five sets, a cheerful Zverev replied that he had always been physically fit. He said, “Honestly, I think I’m quite fit, to be honest. I feel like physically I’m okay. Sometimes, I feel like I just find a way like today.”

What fans liked about the young and talented player was that he admitted his faults. Zverev acknowledged that he wasn’t the best player that day on the court. “Today, I was not the better player on the court. I was not hitting my forehand and backhand better. I was not doing anything better than he did. But I found the way which is the most important,” said the World No. 7.

Zverev certainly has to learn a lot, but he has got the perseverance. He will face the Italian player Marco Cecchinato in the third round of the French Open. Will the young prodigy be able to win his maiden Grand Slam title at the French Open 2020?
