McLaren driver Lando Norris had a fairly mediocre 2019 season, but a decent one for a rookie driver. However, he feels that his points tally is not a proper representation of his progress and good form. He blamed numerous mechanical failures for preventing him from showing his true abilities. As a result, a number of experts made assumptions after observing from the outside.

Norris bagged a respectable 49 points in his maiden F1 season with McLaren. This placed the young Briton 11th in the 2019 drivers’ championship. What made life difficult for him at McLaren was his teammate, Carlos Sainz. The Spaniard ended McLaren’s podium drought and scored almost double of Norris’ tally. This was enough for Sainz Jr to secure a top six finish in the championship, beating Pierre Gasly and Alex Albon.

While it looks like Carlos Sainz was the superior driver, Lando Norris believes that the statistics are a little flawed. The British youngster admitted that he caught a lot of bad luck during some Grand Prix weekends.

“I think there were a lot of times last year when I had a mechanical failure when I was about to score good points,” the 20-year-old told Reuters.

“We had France, Spa, Montreal. There were quite a few. It was a shame but I know this and the team know it.”

Was there any statistic where Lando Norris was ahead?

Admittedly, Lando Norris had the measure of Sainz in the qualifying battle. A tally of 11 to 10 ensured that it was a tight battle between the teammates. It also proved that Norris has the pace to keep up and even beat the 25-year-old in the same machinery.

Norris, Sainz and McLaren know that the Briton has a lot to offer on the plate. However, he confessed that he would be glad if the general public knew of his budding talent as well.

As a parting note, he said, “It would be nice if everyone knew because a lot of people just make assumptions on what they see and don’t actually having any idea what’s going on. That’s just how people act and how people are.”
