“Made Me Dig In”: Will Smith Reveals Venus and Serena Williams Were Uncertain About King Richard

American tennis player Serena Williams has been a once-in-a-generation athlete. The manner in which she continues to strive for further greatness is commendable. However, one needs to be aware of the efforts that go into helping her become such a tremendous tennis player.

Her father Richard Williams has been the key instrumental force in her career. He made sure both his daughters, Venus and Serena went on to make it large in life. There is a movie, ‘King Richard’ based on the life of the great man and how he went about his things.

His role in the movie is being played by the legendary, Will Smith. Recently, the actor spoke about his journey in this film. He stated, “They were a little uncertain at first. When we met we talked about everything, quality aspects. They loved the screenplay, they said that they would execute the project but they would wait until they saw the film to put their name on it. It made me dig in.”

The actor had to convince Serena Williams and sister

As Smith studied the script of the movie, he grew more fond of Richard. In fact, he related him to his own father. However, Will does mention an interesting fact, that both the sisters were slightly skeptical of the whole idea. It all ended well as they loved the screenplay eventually.

The 53-year-old stated, “I just deeply wanted to honor them and their family. I already had a secret admiration for Richard Williams. He really reminds me of my father and I know what that struggle is, it’s really unique kind of a struggle. I was excited to honor him and the family, I’m glad they liked the film.”
