While Chelsea were the first one to score through N’Golo Kante in the Manchester City edged closer to early runaway leaders Liverpool after they managed to edge past Chelsea in the Premier League in Saturday’s late kick off.21st minute, Manchester City were quick to equalize through Kevin De Bruyne eight minutes later. And eight more minutes later, Riyad Maharez made it 2-1 City, when he cut inside from the right side just inside the box and put it past Kepa Arizabalaga.
The game was heading into a nervy finish with the score still 2-1. In the final few minutes of the game Raheem Sterling thought, he sealed all three points and nerviness.
But a familiar feeling echoed around the Etihad as the game was stopped for a VAR check. And a sigh of familiar frustration was let out when the goal was ruled out by the finest of margins.
It was not the first time that City were being disallowed a goal by VAR and not the first time that Sterling was being disallowed a goal by VAR.But fortunately for City, the disallowed goal did not cost much as they won the match eventually and kept the gap between them and Liverpool to a single digit figure.
After the game, Sterling tool to Twitter to joke about VAR.
The match ended Chelsea’s recent run of games of positive results under their young manager. Chelsea were coming into the game with seven consecutive victories after a loss against Liverpool at home in September.
Chelea manager Frank Lampard, talking after the match said: “Maybe it is not the critical factor, but coming into the game in our recent form and developing quickly, I wanted us to come here and be brave. Be brave on the ball and off it and I think that you saw that from us today. At 1-0 we had a relative control of the game. Of course when you are here it can never last. They had a couple of moments, but we were playing well and throughout the game there were a lot of positives. At this level maybe it shows that the finer details in the boxes, both boxes decide these ones.”
