Maria Sharapova Replaces Serena Williams at Greenbrier Champions Tennis Classic

As Maria Sharapova is hitting hard on the practice courts of Toronto and her opening round match at Rogers Cup 2019 is just a few hours away from getting underway. Before she begins her first match of the year at a WTA Premier 5 event, Sharapova is scheduled to feature at Greenbrier Champions Tennis Classic in West Virginia, USA.

This year, Maria Sharapova will replace Serena Williams from the event as the American legend steps down from the tournament. Sharapova has a match scheduled against Caroline Wozniacki at Center Court of Creekside Stadium, Greenbrier. 

Greenbrier Champions Tennis Classic will be taking place on the evenings of September 13 and 14. For the very first time, the event will take place during the PGA TOUR event, which is a Military Tribute at The Greenbrier. The tennis matches take place under the lights on Center Court of Creekside Stadium. This year, it will be the eighth anniversary of the tournament.

Apart from Sharapova and Wozniacki, Jack Sock, Taylor Fritz, and Bryan Brothers will be seen at the event. They will also be playing doubles and mixed-doubles matches at the exhibition event. The schedule has been released by the tournament officials

At Rogers Cup 2019, the Russian, Maria Sharapova is scheduled to face the sixteenth seed, Anett Kontaveit from Estonia in the night session match today. This year, Kontaveit was a finalist at Stuttgart Open 2019 and she lost to Petra Kvitova in the finals. 

Before starting her venture in Canada, Maria Sharapova annulled her coaching league with coach Thomas Hogstedtch. They were working together from 2018 and before that, they were training from 2011 to 2013.

Under, Hogstedtch she completed her Career Slam as she lifted up the title at Roland Garros for the first time. That year, she also won the Olympic silver medal in London and held the World Number one ranking.

Maria Sharapova is playings at Rogers Cup for the first time since 2011. Previously, she was a finalist in the year 2009, and back then she lost to her compatriot, Elena Dementieva.
