Croatian tennis player Marin Cilic is currently at the fag end of his career. At 31 years of age, Cilic’s glory days of the mid-2010s are far behind him. However, the former world no 3 has announced a major change in his coaching staff that might be a turning point for him, late in his career.

The Croatian has announced Vedran Martic as his new coach for the 2020 season. Martic, who is a seasoned campaigner on the ATP circuit having guided the rise of Karen Khachanov, is also the current guide of the Davis Cup campaign of the Croatian team.

Under his watch, the team recently made it to the main draw of the Davis Cup finals, defeating India 3-1. Interestingly, Cilic put up a flawless performance in the victory. He drew two important singles victories against Ramkumar Ramanathan and Sumit Nagal. Martic had gone on to declare that Croatia should have a statue constructed in the name of Marin Cilic.

Martic guided Ivanosevic to a Wimbledon victory in the year 1998. His stint with the Croatian started in 1996 and ended in the year 2000. The most recent successes achived by him came with Russian star Karen Khachanov. Martic helped Khachanov to win three ATP tour titles in the year 2017.

However, he parted ways with Khachanov to spend more time with his wife and three children. Seems like a coaching stint with Marin Cilic was a proposal which was too attractive for him to ignore.

Martic and Cilic will now look to rebuild the falling career of Marin Cilic. The Croatian had a horrendous 2019 season that saw him reaching his current plight at World no 37. However, 2020 has been good for him so far. He made it to the fourth round of the Australian Open where he beat Benoit Paire and upset top 10 player Roberto Bautista Agut.

Do you think Vedran Martic can bring a turnaround in the career of Marin Cilic?
