Marin Cilic Pulls Out of the Davis Cup Finals 2019

Former World No.3 Marin Cilic pulls out of the Davis Cup Finals 2019, which is scheduled to start from 18th November 2019 to 24th November 2019 in Madrid as the Croatian star has to undergo minor interventions in order to improve his recurring knee injury.

Marin Cilic revealed that he has been struggling with his knee injuries for a year and a half and he felt that surgery would be inevitable. However, after going through an ultrasound test, he learned that surgery would not be required to rectify his knees but some minor actions must be taken to improve his medical disorder due to which, he would not be able to participate at the Davis Cup Finals 2019.

“With the 2019 season finished, I wanted to share an update with you all. The last year and a half has been a real struggle mentally and physically for me,” Marin Cilic wrote in an Instagram post on Thursday.

The 2014 US Open champion further explicated that his injury-prone knee continued to trouble him even after going through rehab. He said: “Even with all the preventative work and rehab my team and I did, my recurring knee injury has continued to give me problems, and as the season progressed it was becoming more evident that surgery was inevitable.”

He further noted: “I recently did an ultrasound and luckily the results were better than expected. The rehab work was successful enough that surgery is not necessary at this stage.”

However, the 31-year-old divulged that he needs to undergo a few minor interventions which will keep him off the tennis court for a longer period and unfortunately means that he will not be able to compete at the Davis Cup this month. He added: “I am extremely disappointed by this, but I believe in my teammates and will be their most devoted fan.”

“In the meantime, I will dedicate myself to getting back to form so that I can enter the 2020 season healthier, more prepared, and more motivated than ever. Thank you all for your constant support and I look forward to seeing you back on tour in 2020,” the Croatian concluded.⠀

Marin Cilic has not won a title since the Queen’s Club Championship in August last year and has managed to win only three titles on the ATP Tour in the last three years.

However, Cilic helped Croatia reached the finals of the Davis Cup 2018 and led the team to the title, defeating France’s Lucas Pouille in straight sets to grab the decisive victory for Croatia.

Croatia is put with Spain and Russia in Group B in Madrid. Borna Coric, Ivan Dodig, Nikola Mektic, Mate Pavic, and Ivo Karlovic will play for Croatia at the Davis Cup 2019.

Three matches will be played in one day, two singles match and one doubles match. The winners of each group and the two best runner-up teams will advance to the quarterfinals.
