Athletico Madrid have beaten Milan and Arsenal to the signing of Columbian Jackson Martinez. The 28-year-old Columbian Striker was said to have joined Milan by FC Porto’s boss. His agent hinted at a move to Spain, with Athleti having already agreed to a deal with the parties.
Following their exit at the hands of Argentina in the 2015 Copa America, the striker confirmed his agents claim.
“I can confirm I am going to Atletico. I am going there for four years but I still do not know when I will be introduced.” he said post match.
He ends a successful 3 year spell at FC Porto (who have a remarkable talent of remaining competitive in their domestic league but selling players for good sums of money), with 92 goals in 132 appearances in all competitions. He won the 2012-13 Portuguese League and 2012, 2013 Portuguese Super Cups.
The fee of the transfer is set to be in the region of €35 million. He is the second striker in recent years to make the switch from Porto to Athletico, following the footsteps of compatriot, Radamel Falcao.
Athletico have now replaced Mario Mandžukić, who left after only a single season with the Madrid outfit, for Juventus. Athletico now got a like for like replacement with Martinez having that physical present upfront, that Simeone loves to have. He also is very quick and a lethal finisher and has been consistent as well which is a plus. It is left to see if he can cope now and perform in a much tougher league.
However, his performances at Europe’s biggest stages have justified that he is ready, as Athletico seek to remount a title challenge in 2015/16.
