In one of these articles, actor Troy Baker opened up about the conversation he had with the Creative Director of the game, Shaun Escayg. Troy Baker was reluctant to play the Hulk in Marvel’s Avengers

When Tony received the call from Shaun for the game, he thought it was about playing the role of Hawkeye. His assumption was based on a previous role he had done for Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, an animated series. However, Shaun made it clear that they did not expect him to play Hawkeye.

Considering his close resemblance to Loki, which earned him a part in the Avengers Assemble show, it was Troy’s next best guess.

At this point, Troy thought that Shaun definitely had the wrong guy. His suspicions took stronger roots when Shaun asked him to play the role of Bruce Banner. Assuming that the role of Banner naturally comes with the role of Hulk, he explained why he didn’t really want to be Hulk.

I didn’t really want to be the Hulk. I know people who have played Hulk and those guys always walk out of those sessions (imitates a hoarse whisper) ‘See you guys in two weeks.’ I didn’t want to blow my voice.

His confusion was valid. However, Shaun patiently explained to him what the role demanded. He said that he didn’t want Troy to play Hulk either. For the game, Hulk and Banner were completely unrelated. Therefore, there were two different actors assigned for the roles.

The game wanted to be completely different from the movies

Shaun accepted that they couldn’t recreate what the movies had achieved. He told Troy, “Look man, there’s no way to match or repeat or what the movies have done, and we’re not going to do those versions of the characters. We want to do something completely different. So if you’re down for it, I want to show that Banner is at the heart of this story.

To this, Troy replied, “I was like, okay I’m in. No matter what this thing is, I am in.”

With time, as well as while the production progressed, Troy slowly built a firm grasp over his role. He understood the story and tried to involve himself in the unique experience. He admitted that he was constantly surprised as well as impressed.

Later in the interview, he went on to talk about the Hulk-Banner dynamic, his colleagues in the game, and the friends he made on the set. Watch the rest of the interview to know what Troy’s co-actor Sandra thinks about him.
