Sofia Kenin shocked the world when she upset the tennis giant Serena Williams at the French Open 2019. At that time, hardly anyone knew the 20-year-old American or paid attention to her.

However, she forced them to take notice through this giant leap forward. Of course, she was to achieve many great things going forward. This would include a title victory at the Australian Open this year and a recent break into the WTA top 5 rankings.

Despite that, a young Kenin believes that it was the victory against Serena that gave wings to her passion. That’s when she started to believe that she could hang with the big girls. Let’s hear what Kenin told the Tennis magazine podcast about this incredible achievement of her career.

What did Sofia Kenin say about Serena Williams?

Kenin was asked about the moment that finally made her feel that she was fulfilling her potential. Interestingly, she talked about the famous Serena Williams victory before moving to the Australian Open –

“When I started and moved up the rankings, I felt like I can. But obviously Serena’s match at French Open changed everything. I got more confident, I played more free. Of course, there’s more expectations. Yeah, I just believed I could do it and it was a moment that I’m obviously never going to forget. Of course, Australian Open and that, two moments I’m never going to forget in my career. Hopefully, I’ll have more grand slam titles so I can add that to the list.”

In fact, even in the finals, most people backed a resurgent Garbine Muguruza who was on fire. However, Kenin had a grand slam which wasn’t discussed much despite her supreme performances. Ultimately, she would become the person to win the big one.
