Matteo Berrettini Stuns Dominic Thiem at Shanghai Rolex Masters 2019

No.11 seed Matteo Berrettini cruises past the French Open finalist and No.4 seed Dominic Thiem in straight sets 7-6, 6-4 in 1 hour and 40 minutes in the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Rolex Masters 2019 on Friday.

Set one

The first set was quite an equal one as both the players were involved in long rallies throughout the set. The two players held their opening three service games quite comfortably till 3-3.

Dominic Thiem then stepped up in the next game to get a breakpoint but the Austrian couldn’t take the advantage as Matteo Berrettini survived and held a crucial service game.

The set then went on till the tiebreaker with the two playing some high-quality tennis to held their service games respectively without facing a single breakpoint. Dominic Thiem started to dominate the tiebreaker as he conquered the first three points.

However, the Italian fought back and won the next three points consecutively to level back the breaker. The 23-year-old then earned two set points 6-4 but Thiem kept his composure and saved them to extend the tiebreaker. The 26-year-old squandered a set point on Berrettini’s serve at 8-7 before the latter won three consecutive points to secure the first set 7-6(8) in 57 minutes.

Set two

The second set was a replica of the first set as both the player holding their serve strongly till 3-3. Matteo Berrettini then changed gears as he earned his first break point of the match. Thiem saved two breakpoints before the break went towards the 11th seed Matteo Berrettini.

Berrettini, who was not broken in the whole match continued to dominate on his serve as he served out the match, winning the set 6-4.

Matteo Berrettini will face Alexander Zverev in the all under-24 semifinals at the 2019 Shanghai Masters 1000 on Saturday.
