Wednesday night carried plenty of weight for Lionel Messi as Inter Miami opened its 2026 Leagues Cup campaign against Atlético de San Luis at Nu Stadium. With Luis Suárez unavailable, the spotlight was firmly on the Argentine captain and much of the attacking responsibility also rested on Messi’s shoulders. It was also his first appearance since Argentina’s heartbreaking defeat in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, a loss that ended another memorable international run. But if there were any doubts about how he’d respond, Messi erased them in less than an hour.
The 39-year-old inspired Inter Miami to a 4-2 victory with two goals and an assist, while adding yet another pair of milestones to a career that somehow keeps finding room for more history. His brace took him to 14 Leagues Cup goals in just 12 appearances, moving him past Los Angeles FC forward Denis Bouanga to become the tournament’s all-time leading scorer. But it wasn’t as simple as it looked.
Miami actually fell behind early, but Messi wasted little time changing the game’s direction.
In the 13th minute, Noah Allen burst down the left flank and drilled a low cross into the penalty area. Timing his run perfectly, Messi met it first time with a left-footed volley that flew past goalkeeper Andrés Sánchez, leveling the score at 1-1. And his second goal was vintage Messi.
Just before halftime, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner collected the ball inside the box, danced past two defenders with effortless close control, and calmly slotted his finish into the bottom corner to extend Miami’s lead to 3-1.
He wasn’t done there.
Deep into first-half stoppage time, Messi curled a pinpoint delivery into the six-yard box, where defender Micael rose above everyone to head home Miami’s fourth goal. Although San Luis pulled one back after the break, the damage had already been done as Inter Miami opened the tournament with a convincing 4-2 win.
It was a familiar sight for Miami fans.
Three years after leading the club to its first-ever Leagues Cup title, Messi has once again begun the competition in dominant fashion. And with Wednesday’s performance came another chapter in his seemingly endless record book.
Apart from becoming the tournament’s all-time leading scorer, The night also marked another staggering career milestone. Messi reached 921 career goals and 419 assists in 1,165 matches, becoming the fastest player to hit the combined landmark.
Perhaps that’s what makes his latest feat so remarkable. Most players would still be recovering from the emotional and physical toll of a World Cup campaign. Messi, meanwhile, returned to club duty just two weeks after the final and immediately produced a match-winning display.
His World Cup itself was historic despite Argentina falling one step short of the title.
Messi finished the tournament with 21 career World Cup goals, breaking Miroslav Klose’s long-standing record of 16. He also became one of the first players to appear in six FIFA World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022, and 2026), the first player to register at least one assist in six different editions, and, at 39 years old, the oldest player ever to score a World Cup hat trick, accomplishing the feat against Algeria.
For Messi, the World Cup ended with heartbreak but also another collection of records. And if Wednesday was any indication, there has been little time to dwell on what might have been.
The goals are still flowing and the records continue to pile up. And after another masterclass in Inter Miami colors, perhaps the most meaningful praise came not from the record books but from his own head coach.
Messi earns a huge comparison from his Inter Miami coach
After the final whistle, Inter Miami head coach Guillermo Hoyos made it clear that the result hadn’t come easily. The conditions alone made Wednesday’s contest a difficult test.
“I think it was a very exhausting match of a lot of ball possession, coming from both teams,” Hoyos said. “This has been a very tough match in a very tough pitch with high humidity, and we also felt the heat.”
Despite the draining conditions, one player continued to perform as though nothing had changed.
At 39 years old, Messi covered ground, dictated the tempo, scored twice, and set up another goal, once again proving why age seems to matter little whenever he steps onto a soccer pitch.
Naturally, his manager was left in awe.

Reflecting on Messi’s stunning opening goal, a first-time left-footed volley after Noah Allen’s cross, Hoyos admitted even his players were replaying it after the match.
“The guys were showing me the first goal he scored and how he made that shot. It was something very complicated,” the head coach claimed. “Anyone who plays football knows how difficult it is to have that precise and clinical space and timing. And to place that ball that is coming from the left to the right, and shoot it to the right…so if we were talking about painting, I will call him Picasso.”
It’s not every day that a soccer player is compared to one of history’s greatest artists, but Hoyos felt the analogy fit perfectly. For him, Messi’s finish wasn’t just technically brilliant—it was a piece of art.
With Inter Miami off to a winning start in the Leagues Cup and their captain already in record-breaking form, attention now shifts to Saturday’s showdown against Monterrey.
