At the beginning of the season, Ashleigh Barty won the Yarra Valley Classic, held in Melbourne prior to the Australian Open. Meanwhile, Bianca has returned to the top of her game after being on the sidelines for a lengthy period. At the end of the 2019 season, she suffered a knee injury, which forced her to stay away from Tour.

Barty came through a tricky path to reach the final
To reach the final, Barty beat Ukrainian star Elina Svitolina in straight sets. Prior to that, she beat Belarusian player Aryna Sabalenka in three close-fought sets. Earlier, she had defeated former Grand Slam winner Victoria Azarenka. Those wins may give her an edge over Bianca in the final.
On the other hand, Andreescu knocked out Greek rising star Maria Sakkari in a close contest. In the earlier round, she had come back from a set down to beat two-time Grand Slam winner Garbine Muguruza. During the initial stages, she even overcame a hurdle and beat American tennis player Amanda Anisimova.
