Is the dream over? Ever since his retirement, one goal has kept Alex Rodriguez’s fire lit – owning a sports team. The Yankees icon tried to buy the New York Mets with his then-beau Jennifer Lopez but the deal collapsed before they could get any closer. While that was a setback, Rodriguez bounced back quickly in 2021 when he partnered up with Marc Lore to buy the Minnesota Timberwolves. Up until Glen Taylor’s announcement, it had been all sunshine and rainbows for the baseball legend.

Everyone knows hearing the words “it’s over,” is never a good thing. But experiencing it when you’re $500 million deep is just unimaginable. However, that’s exactly what’s happened with Rodriguez and Lore. With the the Timberwolves’ owner getting a little “cold feet,” Rodriguez’s dream is in danger of dying once again. However, the situation isn’t as simple as it looks.

The New York Post has reported the entire timeline of this epic collapse. The Post has indicated that it was a case of failing relationships and cold feet that led to the anti-climatic end to this story. According to the report, it was not just Glen Taylor who lost interest but also Marc Lore who seemingly walked away from taking complete control of the team.

According to the agreement between Lore and Rodriguez, the T-Wolves would’ve been majorly owned by Lore while A-Rod would take a secondary role. But then, Lore who is worth $4 billion backed out of investing much of the $520 million needed to give their group that remaining 40% control of the team. With A-Rod forced to raise the majority of the amount alone, he went to The Carlyle Group.

But then months passed by before the NBA rejected the Carlyle Group’s investment. While A-Rod had a backup, it was too late for him. The deadline was March 27 and as it ended so did Rodriguez’s chances of owning the Timberwolves. Simultaneously, Glen Taylor started getting cold feet regarding this sale. He felt Lore and A-Rod were “too involved” in the team’s functioning.

Add to that the T-Wolves’ historic run this season. That made Taylor feel even more excited about keeping control of the team with him. All of that led to this present situation where A-Rod’s chances of owning the team have declined tremendously. But then there’s still hope.

Could a mediator help Alex Rodriguez in realizing his dream?

Rodriguez’s agreement with Taylor suggests the use of arbitration in such situations. With their statement ostensibly stating that Lore and A-Rod are still interested in buying out the Timberwolves, there’s a chance that a massive court battle will follow soon. That may be the only option for Rodriguez to realize his dream.

Rodriguez’s net worth isn’t in the same vicinity as Lore’s. So this was perhaps his best chance to own a sports team. As of now, there’s no clarity regarding the date of this arbitration and how long it can last. But with the fireworks just starting, one can expect more stories about this situation to come out soon.
