The World Series is officially gripping the nation with the Diamondbacks and Rangers echoing through the streets. Fans seem to have fully bought into the underdog tale of the D-Backs. The story of the manager and the struggles that the team faced has turned them into people’s favorite team. Their popularity is seemingly transcending the sport right now. Now the chants of their name are being heard in other sporting events as well.

The most extraordinary moments of sports come when their figures or teams start to find acceptance outside of the sport. Like NBA legend Michael Jordan did during his peak, or Boxing legend Mohammad Ali for the entirety of his career. During these moments, it becomes apparent that a good story transcends the limitations of a sport’s popularity. That is exactly what has happened with the Snakes.

As Game 2 of the Fall Classic ended with the Arizona Diamondbacks leveling the series by beating the Rangers 9-1, the fans again began to dream. What if the D-Backs actually win the ultimate battle? In case they did, it will be one of the greatest underdog stories of all time. Hence, their thoughts translated into audible expressions as they spoke, “Let’s go, D-Backs!”. Neither the place nor the occasion mattered; the fans just wanted to show their support for the ‘Answerbacks’.

One thing to note here is that, the voices echoed at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona—the home of the Phoenix Suns but, more importantly, the hometown of the Diamondbacks. During the NBA season opener between the Phoenix Suns and Utah Jazz, the fans erupted in the chants of the D-Backs post the result of WS Game 2 was showcased onto the screen.

To make it better for the crowd, the Phoenix Suns themselves won their game with a score of 126-104. So the fans had more than a few reasons to cheer in the Footprint Center. Still, the surge in the popularity of Diamondbacks cannot be undermined. A former D-Back tweeted a while back that the team was not as popular as it should be. Maybe now they are. Now the bigger question is: can they win it all? Game 2 suggests they can.

Game 2 was a stark contrast to the previous game. While Game 1 was a close encounter that ended with a comeback win for the Rangers, no comeback was on the horizon for them this time around. From the first inning itself, the Snakes strangled the Lone Stars, gradually tightening their grip with each passing moment. It was the masterful pitching of Merril Kelly that brought the game to the lap of the D-Backs.

If the present standards of performance continue for the D-Backs, they might as well win the World Series. Still, the series shifts towards their home in Chase Field. The Rangers are 8-0 on road this postseason, so the D-Backs cannot relax just yet. Anything can happen in the World Series in the upcoming games.

The Footprint Center’s fan reaction, though, proves one thing: the ratings might not be as high as they once were, but the impact of baseball on the zeitgeist is just as strong as ever.
