Derek Jeter Was Excited With His Ability to Take Michael Jordan’s Sprawling Brand to New Heights in 2016

Derek Jeter became the role-model representation of a baseball legend and a great athlete during his active years. So he reaped the benefits of his achievements beyond his retirement. Jeter signed contracts with frontline brand companies including Nike’s Michael Jordan shoes. 

Two iconic athletes, Jeter and Jordan’s friendship travel a long way. Their prowess in their respective sports helped them to get acquainted. They have known each other since Jordan played baseball in the Arizona Fall League during his younger years. Jordan soon took Jeter under his wings as a genuine elder brother would.

Jordan was an equally adept businessman, just like his masterclass on the basketball court. Back in 1984, a rookie Jordan signed a partnership with the leading sports brand, Nike. At that time, Jordan was looking for an athlete endorsement deal. Along came Nike, with a far more lucrative deal on offer in comparison to other large companies. 

When Derek Jeter got a contract extension with Nike 

Legendary baseball icon Derek Jeter has worn Air Jordan shoes for a long time. After Michael Jordan began his partnership with Nike, his signature shoes got launched. Air Jordan shoes were available to the public for the first time in 1985. While Jeter signed up with Nike in 1999.

Air Jordan began making their signature shoes for Jeter in 2002. Following on, a retired Jeter got a contract extension from Nike in 2016. He became the Captain of the Jordan brand’s training category. In addition, the new role for Jeter also meant assisting Nike in selecting new baseball endorsers.

Expressing his happiness, Jeter said, “I spent my entire baseball career trying to be the best player I could be and I am excited to help the next generation reach that goal through Jordan Training and Baseball.”

Interestingly, Jeter and Jordan also became joint owners of the MLB franchise, Miami Marlins, in 2017. Jordan joined as a minority shareholder, while Jeter had a major share and also administered as the franchise’s CEO. However, Jeter resigned from his post in 2022. 

Jeter and Jordan’s respective playing careers 

Jeter made his MLB debut as the New York Yankees’ shortstop in 1995. He continued playing with the team, holding on to his position until retirement in 2014. Jeter is a 14-time All-Star player with five World Series championships.
