The Bronx Bombers finally have good news after a terrible week. On July 6, they put a full stop to a six-game losing skid against the Queens. The highlight of the game was Cody Bellinger‘s double-play. And both the captain and the skipper are happy…
It felt like déjà vu when Juan Soto hit an 89.9 mph liner in the seventh inning. For a moment, it looked like the ball would find the gap, helping the Mets regain momentum again on Sunday. But it didn’t. Instead, it found Cody Bellinger’s glove—a shoestring catch. And that’s not it. Bellinger then threw a rocket to first base to double off Francisco Lindor.
Aaron Boone couldn’t hide how satisfaction with this kind of perfection. Post-game, he shared with Yes Network, “Considering the context of this week and everything, it’s probably our play of the year so far… And the quality of the throw, to double ’em off, just a great play by Belli.” Well, it did become a turning point not just in the game but also in a very tough week.

And it amazed Aaron Judge, too. “That was incredible,” he exclaimed. “I’ve never seen something like that on the field.” Judge knew the importance of that double play. One homer, and just like that, the game could have gone in the Mets’ favor. As he explained further, “Especially a guy like Soto – I’ve seen him hit so many line drives over outfielders’ heads when they come in too hard – it’s just all around a perfect play and we needed, especially in that spot.”
After everything was said and done, Bellinger stated, “It was a hard-hit ball. It’s just trying to get the best read possible and I saw it in the air and had a really good bead on it. So, I was just glad I was able to make the play. So when I looked up, I saw Goldie with his glove high, so I tried to make a good throw.”
It won’t be wrong to say it was the Cody Bellinger moment that kept the Big Apple talking. And so, the praises weren’t limited to Boone and Aaron Judge. It came from the Queens’ dugout, too.

The Yankees dugout went crazy with joy after Bellinger made a double play that ended their losing streak. Even Mets manager Carlos Mendoza couldn’t help but tip his cap. “Pretty incredible play there… Probably the play of the game!”
In fact, one of his double-play snags, Francisco Lindor, remarked, “That one definitely hurt us.”

Cody Bellinger isn’t just a one-night wonder. Let’s not forget he won the National League Gold Glove in 2019 as the best defensive right fielder for the Dodgers. And on Sunday, with that throw and catch, he reminded once again why he won that award.
His teammates know. And they didn’t shy away from singing high praises for him. Paul Goldschmidt, who caught Bellinger’s throw at first, said it was “a game-changing play, potentially a game-winning play for us.”
Jazz Chisholm Jr., who was sitting on the top step of the dugout railing, stated, “The throw was even more impressive than the play. It’s one of the toughest plays — and one of the best plays —I’ve seen.”
