The Yankees are navigating one of the most critical stretches of their 2025 season. During a player and coach day off, manager Aaron Boone chose to attend Bill Belichick’s coaching debut at UNC, where his son Brandon Boone is a student and offensive analyst for the football program. Boone was seen walking to the field in Chapel Hill before the game, which sparked a wave of online criticism. That also included a harsh jab from a former Yankee outfielder who’s long been vocal about his dislike for the team.

The former Yankee outfielder, who had a brief tenure in the Bronx, mocked Boone’s hoodie-clad appearance at the game. “Biggest two-week stretch of the season and this dude is at a football game with his hoodie tied around his waist 😭,” he noted. For a while now, Clint Frazier has been known for seemingly having a lingering beef with the franchise and Boone.

Well, sure, the Yankees’ upcoming stretch is daunting. However, does that mean Boone’s presence at the game was wrong? It’s just that Aaron Boone has long been a source of frustration for the Yankees’ faithful. While the Yankees lost to the White Sox on Sunday, they did win seven straight before that.

As they entered Monday’s off day, the Bombers were only three games behind the Blue Jays in the AL East. Notably, a lot of the Yankees’ latest victories have come against weaker teams. That included the Twins, Cardinals, Rays, the Nationals, and White Sox.

That’s why an infamous narrative has fueled the idea that the 2025 Yankees, currently 76-61, perform well against weaker opponents but struggle against stronger competition.

While that felt true throughout the club’s annual summer swoon, they were actually 37-37 against teams with winning records. That was the 10th-best in baseball. Still, it’s always been Aaron Boone taking the heat for his approach with the team.

Yankees’ Aaron Boone called out for being at risk

Adding to Boone’s pressure, MLB insider Bob Nightengale recently predicted several managerial changes in the offseason, including Boone possibly being replaced if the Yankees fail to make the playoffs.

“You’re always on the hot seat when you manage the Yankees. Yankees GM Brian Cashman doesn’t hide his admiration and respect for Boone, but the Yankees certainly need to make the playoffs for Boone to retain his job.” Nightingale noted. If the Yankees don’t make the playoffs, Aaron Boone’s tenure in the Bronx might finally come to an end.

The Yankees resume play with a tough three-game series against the Astros in Houston starting Tuesday, then return home on September 5th for a pivotal three-game series against the AL East leaders Blue Jays. Then the first-place Tigers will visit New York for three more games after that. Following this, they are scheduled to go against the Red Sox. It will wrap up what has been a one-sided season series thus far.

After that, the Yankees’ season will end in a somewhat easier way. They will play 13 games in a row against the Twins, Orioles, and White Sox. It’s a decent way to end what has been an up-and-down season for the Bronx Bombers and Aaron Boone. Until then, Boone’s fate, much like New York’s postseason hopes, hangs on a thread of consistency.
