After failing to win a World Series in his eight-year stint so far with the Yankees, the calls for Aaron Boone’s firing are louder than ever. After ending the Yankees’ dream of reaching back-to-back World Series, a Blue Jays coach has announced that he’ll be leaving Toronto in the offseason. And the Yankees fans are crying out for him to replace under-fire Boone.

Talking baseball on Twitter, posted, “Don Mattingly is leaving the Blue Jays after their World Series run, but he is not planning to retire”. Insider Jon Heyman reported that he was  “grateful to the Toronto hierarchy” for all the scopes he was provided. 

Now, the big question is, why is Mattingly leaving?

The answer is not certain. However, Mattingly has definitely gained some respect from the Yankees fans who think Aaron Boone needs to step down from his position after the ALCS loss against the Blue Jays. 

The team’s estimated payroll for the 2025 season was $323,099,999, which was the highest in MLB. So, with such a huge payroll amount and a history of a powerful season, the fans definitely expected the team to win.

Aaron Boone has also been questioned over some of his decisions. For instance, he benched Ben Rice in the deciding game against the Jays and lost that game. Boone made the same mistake in Game 1 of the AL wild card against the Red Sox. In the two games, the team scored only one run. After the deciding game, commentator Sara Molnick slammed the manager for benching Rice.

“Boone’s steady leadership has value during the grind of a 162-game season. His calm approach often helps players weather adversity. But in October, when urgency and adjustments matter most, his decisions have repeatedly cost the Yankees,” Molnick said.

So, the fans have definitely seen this and other mistakes of Boone and are now asking the team to fire him.

Fan reaction paints a clear picture of dissatisfaction

Fans have made their voices heard, they want change. With Don Mattingly now on the market, many thought this could be perfect timing for the Yankees to make a solid move. One fan posted, “Hire him, Yankees, and put Boone in an industrial shipping crate to Buenos Aires.” 

Another fan takes a more reflective take: “Will the Yankees get smart or nah…” This reaction signals a deeper concern that the franchise might fail to capitalize on opportunities, just like the several past seasons. Given that the NYY has not won a World Series since 2009, regardless of baseball’s top payroll, it is hard for supporters to stay patient.

Some go one step further, calling for action on an immediate basis. One fan declared, “If the Yankee organization was serious, they fire Boone and hire him.” This demand reflects the sentiment that Don Mattingly, a former Yankees coach from 2004 to 2007 and a cherished face in the franchise’s history, could bring back both credibility and leadership to the dugout.

Others took a more personal approach, targeting long-term general manager Brian Cashman. “Cashman, here’s your chance to rid us of that sorry excuse Boone and bring back a real Yankee,” one supporter wrote, pointing to the belief that Mattingly’s past ties to the franchise as a player from 1982 to 1995 make him a perfect contender to lead the charge. 

In the end, one fan summed up the situation perfectly: “Yankees have the perfect reason to move on from Boone now. Don should be the man.” With Mattingly openly searching for a new role and the Yankees searching for a World Series title, many thought this was the correct timing to take action.

The Yankees’ fight with the Jays ended this year in a tie. However, the real news is New York’s inability to turn high checks and historical dominance into recent success. The pressure is mounting as supporters were thinking that Mattingly’s availability in the franchise could return the pride once again.
