The infamous Yankees’ slump deepened on Sunday in the form of a 7-1 loss at the hands of the Houston Astros, marking their seventh defeat in the last ten games. Across eight games since the deadline expired, the Yankees have won just 2 while losing 6 games. Still, for manager Aaron Boone, there’s optimism—bleak optimism!
The Yankees were talked up for their smart trade deadline moves. However, disappointments around the acquisitions are already being felt. By Sunday morning, two of the new additions were placed on the injured list, while one was optioned to the minor leagues.
After the Astros’ loss, the Yankees are now 62-56, but Boone remains steadfast in his belief that the Yankees still have control over their fate. Following Sunday’s loss, during which he was ejected for the fifth time this season, the skipper expressed his unwavering confidence in the team.

“Obviously we’re feeling it, and we know we have to be better; we know we have much higher standards for ourselves and expectations. But at the same time, we’re in control of this. You know, I wholeheartedly believe that we are going to get rolling and turn this thing around. When it does, then you start to really build that next layer of confidence,” he said.

But for fans, these words ring hollow amid the ongoing disappointments. On Sunday, the Yankees recorded three hits and were booed after the final out. If that wasn’t enough, Boone was tossed out after arguing a called strike on Ryan McMahon in the third inning. With an already outraged fanbase, that ejection didn’t come at the best time.
Yankees’ fans are fuming after Boone’s post-game remarks
If Boone’s remarks were supposed to reassure, they didn’t have the desired effects on the fans, as he was once again called out for the lack of urgency, accountability, and direction from the top down. Some lifelong Yankees faithful even openly admitted they had checked out. “Lifelong Yankee fan here. Can honestly say, I don’t give an F anymore. Sad to say. But, this team has nothing going for it. No fire, no drive to win,” a comment read.
With each game, the Yankees are making it harder for their fans to stay invested. Sunday marked the 10th straight game a Yankees starting pitcher didn’t pitch past the fifth inning, and it’s a glaring issue.

Is Aaron Boone's optimism genuine, or just a desperate attempt to save his job?

Another fan pointed out that it’s not Boone; it’s Hal Steinbrenner: “I mean, at this point it’s not even his fault; he can’t fire himself… if Hal is ok with this, which apparently he is because you never hear a word from him, there’s nothing we can do.” Although Boone’s contract was extended for two years this February, keeping him with the Yankees through 2027, his position might not be secure if the Yanks miss the playoffs.

The manager’s tone-deaf remarks have started to bring extreme frustration among fans. “Disgusting, they don’t even do post-game interviews anymore. SAME SHIT, DIFF DAY!!” another fan chimed in. After every loss, Boone has shown optimism about his players—even about players like Devin Williams and Anthony Volpe who have heavily struggled in terms of consistency. Fans are not buying it anymore.

One more X user noted, “Only a month and a half more of Aaron Boone. We’re almost there.” Well, we’re just a few months away from the postseason. And if Boone is unable to take the Yankees to the playoffs, then fans believe he’s for sure getting fired. The Yankees have a .216 batting average in 22 games in the second half. And as poor as it sounds, there’s no guarantee that they will rise up from here.
After eight long years of handling the Yankees with no World Series title, the fans are surprised that Boone is still a part. “It’s astonishing that Boone has been able to keep his job for this long while being this bad. He has zero redeeming qualities as a manager. It’s shocking,” a netizen wrote.
