The 2023 season has not started well for the New York Yankees. Injuries and poor form have plagued the team as they struggle to build momentum. One bright light for the Yankees has been ace pitcher Gerrit Cole. He has been shutting opposing batters down regularly to start the season. Most recently, Cole was left furious by a struggling outfielder’s defensive blunder. Fans reacted to the moment and mocked the outfielder as well. 

Cole has pitched very well thus far and is looking like an early Cy Young award candidate. But this recent fielding blunder truly irked the Yankees ace as he tried his best to limit hits.

New York Yankees’ left fielder Aaron Hicks infuriates Gerrit Cole with his fielding blunder

Yankees ace Gerrit Cole is generally a cool customer on the mound and doesn’t allow anything to phase him. But during their most recent game against the Texas Rangers, Aaron Hicks dropped an easy fly ball, making Cole angry. Twitter user gabe shared a video in which you can see Cole react in anger as Hicks drops the ball. The incident occurred in the third inning with two outs. 

In a Tweet, gabe said, “Aaron Hicks makes Gerrit Cole mad,” while highlighting the defensive error and Cole’s reaction to it. Hicks is one of the most disliked players among fans. They regularly trash him for his poor play on both sides of the game.

The reactions to this defensive lapse have been savage, to say the least.

Some fans mocked Hicks and questioned his ability.

Other fans want him to be on a different team.

This is hardly the first time Hicks has made a defensive blunder. He was mocked for an error he made in Spring Training. Last season he made multiple errors, leading to him being benched or pulled from games. His batting is not much better, his batting average so far is an abysmal .147 to start the season. But luckily, Hicks’ defensive blunder did not cost the Yankees the game as they won 4-2. Furthermore, Cole was able to maintain his unbeaten start to the season.

As of today, Gerrit Cole is one of 6 starting pitchers who have not been hit for a home run yet. Furthermore, he has not lost a game yet, with 5 wins in his 6 starts this season. The New York Yankees’ ace pitcher has taken his game to another level and is in elite form to start the 2023 season. He is and will continue to be an integral part of the Bronx Bombers’ success.
