As the MLB trade deadline buzz hits full volume, all the chatter has been around big names—Luis Robert Jr., Cody Bellinger, and Dylan Cease. Amid the storm of superstar rumors, the Yankees have quietly addressed a pressing need. With Aaron Judge still managing injury risk and the lineup needing more balance against left-handed pitching, New York was bound to make a move. The question wasn’t if—it was who.

That question was answered today when Jeff Passan reported: The New York Yankees have acquired outfielder Austin Slater in a trade with the Chicago White Sox, sources tell ESPN.” In return, the White Sox received Gage Ziehl, as MLB pipeline posted “The @WhiteSox are acquiring Yankees No. 18 prospect Gage Ziehl in the deal for Austin Slater, per @Feinsand.”

It’s a move that may not dominate headlines, but it could prove crucial. Slater, $1.75 million White Sox star, brings exactly what the Yankees were missing: a right-handed outfielder who thrives against lefties. In 2025, he’s posted a .897 OPS in 74 plate appearances against southpaws, making him a reliable weapon off the bench or in situational matchups. Given New York’s recent struggles with their depth outfielders, this deal could be a quiet win.

Though he’s not the star he looked like during his breakout 2020 season (.282/.408/.506, 150 wRC+), Slater has still shown value as a role player. Across 2021–2023, he quietly produced with a .257/.345/.412 line and 3.4 bWAR over 343 games. Even after a bumpy 2024 season during which he bounced around between three teams, he rebounded in Baltimore and carried that momentum into 2025. His current .244/.308/.437 line and 106 wRC+ won’t light up the scoreboard—but it’s solid for a fourth outfielder, especially one expected to hit lefties and give Judge and others breathing room.

For the White Sox, this was likely just a matter of timing. With the team in sell mode and Slater on a one-year deal, flipping him now while his value remains stable made sense. For the Yankees, it’s a depth move with upside—a low-risk swing that might turn into a clutch October at-bat when matchups matter most.

While Slater’s arrival in the Bronx adds some much-needed outfield depth, it’s the uncertainty surrounding Cody Bellinger that might be the bigger subplot as the Yankees toe the line between buying and bracing for impact.

Yankees floated Cody Bellinger in trade talks as Aaron Judge’s injury sparked panic

For a brief moment, it looked like the Yankees could wave the white flag. After a red-hot start to the season, New York has spiraled into a 15-24 slump since mid-June, and the loss of Judge to an elbow injury only heightened the anxiety. With the team fading fast and its captain sidelined, internal discussions reportedly took a sharp left turn.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Austin Slater the Yankees' secret weapon against lefties, or just another benchwarmer?

Have an interesting take?

As per Andy Martino of SNY, the Yankees “brought up Cody Bellinger and Paul Goldschmidt in talks with at least one other club” last week. That kind of chatter doesn’t happen without serious doubt. It was a clear signal that the front office considered hitting the reset button—just in case Judge’s injury lingered longer than expected.

Though Judge is now expected to return later this season—potentially in a DH role—the fact that Bellinger was even discussed speaks volumes. The former MVP has slashed a strong .281/.333/.507 this year while flashing elite defense, but he also holds a player opt-out after 2025, which puts the Yankees in a tough spot. Do they ride it out or sell while his value is high? Clearly, the front office isn’t convinced he’s part of their long-term blueprint—especially with Jasson Domínguez, Trent Grisham, and Spencer Jones looming as everyday candidates in 2026.

At this point, a Bellinger trade looks unlikely, especially with Judge’s return keeping New York’s postseason window open. That brief flirtation with selling may end up being one of the defining “what if” moments of the Yankees’ 2025 season.
