After Not Seeing Aaron Judge ‘Interference’, Aaron Boone Now Denies Seeing Anthony Volpe’s Error In Judgement During Crucial Play

Anthony Volpe’s struggling. More precisely, Volpe is struggling in the shortstop position. In a surprising development, the 2023 Gold Glove winner has been making errors at a rapid rate this season. Until now those errors hadn’t cost the New York Yankees a game but yesterday it finally happened. One of his errors led to the Baltimore Orioles scoring a run and sealing the game. However, maybe the skipper Aaron Boone completely missed out on that play.
Remember when Aaron Judge’s second base slide caused a huge uproar in the Milwaukee Brewers clubhouse? Aaron Boone had shared that he didn’t get a proper view of what Judge did. Now once again, the skipper has a similar comment with regards to Volpe booting the ball away at a crucial moment in the game.
“I actually got a little blocked out,” Boone said about Volpe’s mistake during his postgame interview. “Kind of just took for granted he was going to make the play so I haven’t even seen the replay of it. I just saw it, it saw it kind of roll from his glove but I didn’t see how it hit.”

Boone brought out Clay Holmes in the 8th inning to close the game. At that point, the Bronx Bombers were trailing 1-0 but it was a salvageable situation. But then the runners were on the corners and there were two outs. Luckily for Holmes, Anthony Santander hit a ground ball toward Anthony Volpe. But then the shortstop misjudged a routine play and booted the ball. That allowed Gunnar Henderson to score the run and make it 2-0 for the Orioles.
While Boone denied having a proper vision of the situation, Volpe was more self-aware. The 23-year-old noted the mistake he made during the play.

Anthony Volpe’s struggles continue as the Yankees look to come back stronger
Anthony Volpe was one of the bright spots of the Bronx Bombers during the initial games. In his first 15 games, he averaged .382, got 14 runs, and 10 walks, and had an OPS of 1.041. But in the last 14 games, his average has dropped to .169 with an OPS of just .500. Add to that Volpe has already made 4 defensive errors within 29 games. As a result, he was visibly subdued during his interview.

When asked what happened during this incident, “Just in between. Kind of everything. One hope, whether to go to second or first, so definitely gotta be more decisive,” Volpe said. But while he may be struggling right now, the New York Yankees Faithfuls are completely behind the 23-year-old. The fact that he’s so young makes it obvious to the fans that he’ll be improving with time. Perhaps that’s all that one can hope for as Volpe tries to regain his start-of-the-season form.
