The two-way phenom’s rise to prominence in the last few seasons has made him one of the costliest players in MLB. Last year, he signed a whopping one year, $30 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels. With the trade deadline nearing, he is again free for trade this season. And rising to the occasion, the two more teams are keen on signing the Japanese star.

Earlier, the New York Yankees showed their interest in acquiring Ohtani; now, according to Jon Morosi, Diamondbacks and Orioles have inquired with the Angels about the case of a trade. He tweeted, “Sources: Orioles, DBacks among teams inquiring with the Angels about Shohei Ohtani’s trade availability. Both clubs’ interest has been described as due diligence; both teams have the young talent base conducive to making a trade.

Struggling in the last few seasons, both teams have turned their luck around this season. The Orioles lead the AL East with the most wins in their division. At the same time, the Diamondbacks are in second place in the NL West, just behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. And with the Japanese star, they want to add star power to their teams.

While the other teams are showing their interest in acquiring Ohtani, the Angels also don’t want to drop their best player. They are also exploring the options to retain Sho-time, but given his soaring value, they need help to balance their finances.

Can LA Angels Afford to Retain Ohtani?

The Los Angeles Angels have yet to decide on retaining the two-way phenomenon. According to Jon Morosi” Sources say the Angels’ internal discussions about a buy/sell decision remain ongoing. Team officials are likely to wait until after the upcoming Tigers and Blue Jays series before determining if they’re willing to move Ohtani.”

Ohtani’s cost is likely the reason for the Angels’ reluctance. Given the stellar performance by Ohtani this season and his humongous fan following in the US and Japan, he is predicted to get a contract worth $500-$600 million.
