How did Rodriguez’s mentor help him?
Before Alex Rodriguez opted out of his contract in 2007, he admitted multiple times to remain a Yankee for the rest of his career. But when he became a free agent, he started negotiating with the front office. Later, he found them at a standstill which had a difference of $30 million between what they wanted to spend and what Rodriguez wanted.

Then he did one thing that came to his mind and called his mentor, Warren Buffett. After giving it some thought, Buffett said, “You can set up this incentive package that if you hit home runs that are record-breaking, Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Barry Bonds, each one of them should have a 6 million dollars bonus attached to it. And there’s five of them. And there’s your 30.”

Surely the former Yankee loved this idea and forwarded it to the Yankees’ management as his own. The front office also loved it. And thus Alex ‘A-Rod’ Rodriguez signed a record-breaking deal of $275 million for 10 years with the Yankees.

Did Alex Rodriguez get all $30 million?
According to the deal, A-Rod signed with the Yankees, he was supposed to get $6 million for every home run that he tied with the record makers. And an additional $6 million for breaking that record. But when Rodriguez did tie Willie Mays’ record by hitting the 660th record, the Yankees refused to pay the bonus. They said that the record was of no marketable purpose anymore.

The reason behind it was said that it would be forever considered tainted because of his PEDs usage and for getting banned from the whole 2014 season. However, later, the Yankees and A-Rod agreed that $3.5 of that $6 million would get donated to charities.
