A-Rod became a baseball great at the New York Yankees, but the legendary shortstop started his MLB career with the Seattle Mariners. He was the first draft for the Mariners. The Mariners signed him on a three-year contract worth a $1.3 million deal with a $1 million signing bonus.

“I got a scholarship to the University of Miami. But then the Mariners came calling,” A-Rod said. “They drafted me number one overall. First two things I did; buy my mother a house and buy her car. I think to this day, the happiest days of my life.”
