The Boston Red Sox are aiming to bring in a major impact hitter this offseason. Craig Breslow was urged all along to bring Alex Bregman back after he opted out to test free agency. Many believed Bregman was ready to move on, with the New York Mets and the Detroit Tigers viewed as the top contenders. But after his recent move, it looks more likely that he’ll end up staying with the Red Sox.

Ever since joining Boston, after his time with the Houston Astros, A-Breg has had his Instagram profile picture set in a Red Sox jersey. Recently, he switched it back.

The 2X world champion now has a shot of him in a Red Sox uniform near the dugout, surrounded by cheering Boston fans.

Right after Boston Strong shared Alex Bregman’s updated profile picture on X, fans immediately picked up on it. Many wondered if Alex Bregman was planning to leave, why would he switch his profile photo back to a Red Sox picture? But seems like rumors aren’t going anywhere unless things are finalized.

According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, Boston will either get Alex Bregman back via a long-term contract or zero in on Pete Alonso if Bregman heads elsewhere.

“I look at this as being a two-track possibility for the Boston Red Sox. Either they bring back Bregman, or they make an all-out pursuit for Pete Alonso. I like their chances to get one or the other,” Morosi said on the Hot Stove segment.

For the record, Alex Bregman and Pete Alonso put up nearly identical numbers in 2025.

Bregman hit .273/.360/.462, while Alonso recorded a .272/.347/.524 line. The big difference was apparently in home runs and RBIs. Pete Alonso slammed 20 more home runs and finished with more than double of Alex Bregman’s RBI total.

Even so, Bregman posted a 3.5 fWAR across only 112 games. That nearly matches Alonso’s 3.6 fWAR over a full season.

The Red Sox have been linked to both players early in free agency. However, if not both, Alex Bregman should be Boston’s top priority.

Why Alex Bregman should be Boston’s top target over Pete Alonso?

Alex Bregman is a difference-maker in so many ways. Not just his bat, but he helps other players improve. He makes suggestions, even to pitchers.

The Red Sox have Marcelo Mayer on the way. They’ll need to find a spot for him, but Boston should put Bregman at third base and sort out the rest later. He’s a better option than Alonso because of his defensive value, as also noted by Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

For now, the team already has Triston Casas at first, which is a relatively easy position to fill in for the long term. And with the 25-year-old a clear favorite as 1B, Boston should first fix on 3B.

Alex Bregman played a key role in helping the Red Sox return to the playoffs for the first time since 2021.

He earned his third All-Star selection while finishing the season with a .273 average, 18 home runs, and 62 RBIs. With a career .272 average, 209 homers, and 725 RBIs, Alex Bregman is expected to be one of the most sought-after free agents on the market.

The Red Sox already know the impact Alex Bregman can have on their franchise. As Boston looks to build on its return to the postseason, it should resist chasing Pete Alonso. Instead, they should lock in Alex Bregman at third base for the long haul.
